First up, I’m a lurker over at the Drawing Board (where some REALLY stellar artists, pros, semi-pros, beginners, etc…. gather). While I generally observe from the corner, learning and soaking in the art and critiques from the shadows, I was really happy with the Hulk piece and wanted to get some feedback on it, so I went ahead and posted it. Cool thing I did cause I’ve been getting some good comments, AND Chad Townsend preferred the sketch so much he went ahead and added color to it! Which was slick, because I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve ever had one of my pieces colored by someone else.

Thanks Chad! (definitely check out his work here)
If you haven’t checked out Zuda’s May competition yet… what are you waiting for? I’ve got a few favorites this month.
ACTION, OHIO:
Love the “Marvel”-esque backdrop. Interesting story, fun art. Kind of a larger scale “Unbreakable”.
CAPTAIN LUCK:
This one’s got an old school feel with a classic Sunday Funnies feel. Plus I TOTALLY see Patrick Warburton either playing the lead character in the Live action series or providing the voice in the cartoon.
“E”:
I’m not really sure what’s going on there, but the art is FANTASTIC (right up there with “High Moon”). Plus there’s a “Big Guy”-like robot character. Who could ask for anything more.
And last, but not least! The one comic I keep going back to and the one that has my vote (for now? although I don’t think I see it changing)
CELEDORE
Artist/Writer Caanan Grall has gotten some… I dunno what exactly to call it… flak? Relating it to “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. Which I guess I understand, since the title character is a female monster hunter who happens to be taking down vampires in the first couple screens. But for me that’s where the association ends (not that it means anything, I’ve never seen “Buffy”). It’s got an interesting twist which you should check out yourself, plus the “bonus art” over at Caanan’s blog has some interesting stuff going on as well. Check it out and vote today!

Inspired by actual events at work.

PHEW! Took Monday off this week (hooray for 3 day weekends), here’s the quick rundown of the events of the past few days.
Saturday was FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! So I headed downtown with my daughter to pick up free “Tiny Titans #1″ and bought issues #2 & #3. They are SUPER FUN!

The guys at Blindwolf are doing awesome with them!
Saturday also brought a Guest Comic Blast From the Past! Derrick Fish of “Dandy and Company” posted this guest comic I created for him a few years ago (man I gotta do a new one). Dandy is reminiscent of the old Looney Tunes with great art and fun characters.
Late Sunday night (or more likely early Monday morning) a couple (I’m assuming it was more than one) of idiots decided to go on a little vandalism spree where they broke into vehicles and stole items from said vehicles. We usually leave our car unlocked (in our driveway…. silly us) and Amy had left her wallet in the car (which she normally doesn’t do)… and it was taken. Cash, cards and the like (the CD compartment was open, but apparently we didn’t share similar tastes in music). So Monday morning was spent talking with police (who had talked with numerous other people too…. apparently these morons even stole a couple trucks and had crashed them into fences, parked cars and mail boxes) and canceling all the cards that were in her wallet.
Monday was also a beautiful day, which was good, cause Tuesday was “Spring Clean-up Day” in our town and we needed to get the rest of our yard cleaned up and the debris ( in the form of leaves and such) out to the road. And we did. The end.
Progress continues with the Araknid Kid (don’t forget to send in your Zuda Invitational Nominations before May 23rd! Just go here, type in your name and email, and then in the comments section type “Zuda Invitational Nomination: I want to see Araknid Kid!” and also add up to 9 other comics you’d like to see back) Thanks!

Funny how things have a way of developing. Nipped away at polishing that sketch the last few days to come up with this:

Well, the time has come, deadline for Upper Deck’s sketch cards is Wednesday (need to be in their possession), so last week I spent time wrapping up the cards I needed to get done, scanned them, got them approved and sent! All but 1 was approved (a Firestar) and I voluntarily pulled a Nightcrawler (I messed up on it pretty bad…). All 50 were sent back, and here are the 48:

For the most part I’m happy with them. It was interesting getting back into the traditional way of creating art… There’s no “undo” button when working on them… had to make the best of mistakes and such.
This weekend I learned that one of my favorite artists also contributed to the set. And they’re awesome. Check them out here.
Rich Woodall (Johnny Raygun) tackled 1000 of these puppies!!!! Check ‘em out here.

That’s right, everyones favorite undersea shell creature (ok, so I might’ve made that up).
This weekend I was trying to come up with an idea so I asked my brother for a topic. He gave me “nothing” (figuratively and literally), but he DID ask his partner in crime, Zach, who immediately gave “Clam Festival Clean-up” (???)
I ended up taking the first part of that topic to give you this:

An interesting development over at Zuda.
The Zuda Comics 2008 Invitational
From Ron Perezza’s post yesterday:
Timed with the anniversary of announcing Zuda, our July 2008 competition will feature ten competitors returning from previous competitions - and we want to hear who you want to compete! Here’s how it works:
1. Make a list of ten comics from previous competitions that you think should compete in the Invitational.
2. Send that list to FEEDBACK (feedback@zudacomics.com) no later than May 23rd.
3. We’ll tally the responses and contact the creators. If a creator declines the invitation, we’ll simply move on down the list to the next creator.
4. Throughout June and July we’ll announce which comics will compete.
5. On July 7th (the start date of the July competition) we’ll post eight new
After that, normal competition rules apply and may the best comic win!
So a second chance for the Kid? It’s up to you! Vote your favorites today!
(realistically the chances of AK making it there are 1 in 6. And if even by chance it DOES make it, which I would love, the chances of it winning against something like “The Crooked Man” or another Zuda juggernaut (Litterbox Chronicles, etc.) are gonna be challenging. So again, even if you don’t see new pages on Zuda, you will be able to see new page this summer…. although probably shouldn’t say that. Actually, vote for Araknid Kid or you’ll never see the character AGAIN…and I’ll kick a puppy! That’s mean…. I’ll kick a PICTURE of a puppy! So vote.)
